CMTC Responsibilities: Dr. Tarin has oversight of the Faculty Development project to ensure that all activities are completed in a timely, cost effective, and ethical manner. He assists in providing comprehensive oversight of curriculum design and evaluation. Dr. Tarin also assists with recruitment of WMMC Faculty and other participants.

Dr. Tarin was born and raised in Los Angeles to immigrant parents who experienced the challenges of adverse socio-economic conditions. Dr. Tarin has served as the Director of Women’s Health at AltaMed Health Services and Chief Medical Officer of the University Muslim Medical Association Health Center. In 2011, Dr. Tarin completed the California Health Care Foundation (CHCF) Health Leadership Fellowship. In addition to establishing important professional and academic relationships, Dr. Tarin enhanced her health services research, health policy, and workforce training and development skills. She also gained a strong understanding of health care financing, resource distribution, quality and utilization management, and project management.

Hector Flores, M.D.

CMTC Responsibilities: Oversight of the FacultyDevelopment grant to ensure that all activities are completed in a timely, cost effective, and ethical manner, as well as oversight of all developmental and evaluation activities and responsibility for reports and dissemination of results. Dr. Flores is responsible for oversight of project personnel’s efforts to develop, implement, and teach the onsite workshops.  He also participates in the teaching sessions both onsite and online.  Dr. Flores serves as the key faculty member for the recruitment of participants in each of the project cycles.

Dr. Flores grew up in Southern California and graduated from Stanford University with a BA in History. He attended the UC Davis School of Medicine and was honored with the Heineman Pulmonary Medicine Award and the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation National Fellowship. He completed his residency in Family Medicine at Kaiser Permanente in Los Angeles and is a founding member and Co-Director of the White Memorial Medical Center Family Medicine Residency Program. Dr. Flores is the recipient of numerous academic and civic awards and in 2007 he received the Champions of Health Professions Diversity Award from The California Wellness Foundation.

Julie G. Nyquist, Ph.D.

CMTC Responsibilities: Assists in training project participants and oversees the formative and summative evaluation of the project. Dr. Nyquist provides the educational expertise for creation of the integrated Faculty Development curriculum and will assist with the online activities and conduct teaching sessions onsite and online.

Dr. Nyquist is a Professor in the Division of Medical Education at the University of Southern California. She joined the faculty in 1981, directs the Master of Academic Medicine, and has specialized expertise in evaluation and faculty development. Dr. Nyquist has given over 250 workshops, nationally and internationally, to faculty members from a variety of health professions. From 1993 to 2001 she also served as the Director of Medical Education at Kern Medical Center in Bakersfield, California, where she provided oversight for all educational activities (undergraduate, graduate, CME, and faculty development) within the medical center. Professor Nyquist received her doctorate in Educational Psychology from Michigan State University in 1981.

 

Pam Teplitz, Project Manager, White Memorial Family Medicine Residency Program, Los Angeles, USA

CMTC Responsibilities: Ms. Teplitz is responsible for ensuring all project objectives are met in a timely and accurate manner and assists with formative and summative evaluation. She is a key member of the Cultural Competence and Education Training Team, providing support in developing and disseminating materials used to train faculty participants. She coordinates the onsite workshops and provides support for all online training activities. She manages the Cultural Medicine Training Center website and undertakings in all recruitment activities for the Faculty Development project related to identifying a minimum of 15 faculty members per cycle.
 

Zulay Carrillo, Project Assistant, White Memorial Family Medicine Residency Program, Los Angeles, USA

CMTC Responsibilities: Ms. Carrillo provides programmatic, clerical and administrative support to the project team including assistance in managing all aspects of the program, preparing programmatic reports, utilizing computer expertise in data entry and utilizing applicable software for databases, coordinating training logistics, organization of documents, preparation of correspondence, arranging for meetings and providing clerical support for the WMMC Family Medicine Residency Program and faculty practice.

Zulay Carrillo was born and raised in East Los Angeles. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and a minor in Medical Anthropology from the University of California, Irvine. Zulay returned to Boyle Heights to continue working in the community in which she grew up.

 

Erasmo "Tony" Cortez, J.D., Special Projects Administrator, White Memorial Family Medicine Residency Program, Los Angeles, USA

Graduate School: Ventura College of Law

Erasmo “Tony” Cortez, J.D. was born and raised in Southern California and graduated from Ventura Community College with an A.A. - Bilingual Cross-cultural Emphasis. He attended the University of California at Santa Barbara where he graduated with a B.A. in Political Science. Mr. Cortez earned a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from the Ventura College of Law. He is the Administrator of Special Projects for the WMMC Family Medicine Residency Program. Mr. Cortez has nearly twenty-five years of grants and contracts management experience and in promoting minority health professions development. He serves as a project Manager, supervisor of key personnel, and is the Benefits and Communications Manager for Family Care Specialists Medical Group.  He serves as the Grants and Research Contracts Administrator for the WMMC Charitable Foundation and also provides the Foundation and hospital departments with assistance in maintaining programmatic and financial compliance with all contract and grant requirements.

CMTC Responsibilities: Dr. Samaniego oversaw the Faculty Development project through 2015, ensuring that all activities were completed in a timely, cost effective, and ethical manner. He assisted in providing comprehensive oversight of curriculum design and evaluation. Dr. Samaniego also assisted with recruitment of WMMC Faculty and other participants.

Dr. Samaniego was born and raised in Southern California. He obtained a BS Degree in Biology from Occidental College in 1977, received his medical degree from the University of Southern California in 1981, and went on to complete his internship and residency at Kaiser Permanente in Los Angeles. As a founding member of the White Memorial Medical Center Family Medicine Residency Program, he completed his twentieth year as residency director in 2015. Dr. Samaniego also serves as president of the Family Care Specialists Medical Corporation.

 

Jeffrey M. Ring, Ph.D., Developer and initial faculty, Family Medicine Faculty Development Fellowship; prior Director of Behavioral Sciences and Cultural Medicine, WMMC Family Medicine Residency Program, Los Angeles, USA

CMTC Responsibilities: Collaborated in developing the Faculty Development curriculum. He provided overall leadership for the Cultural Competence and Education Training Team and provided extensive teaching services related to the onsite and online workshops. He assisted other key team members in the development and dissemination of materials used to train participants.

Dr. Ring was the Director of Behavioral Sciences and Cultural Medicine in the White Memorial Family Medicine Residency Program in Los Angeles for 19 years, where he taught cultural medicine, doctor-patient communication, and mind-body medicine. He received his PhD in clinical psychology and is a Fellow of the Society for the Study of Ethnic Minority Issues (Division 45) of the American Psychological Association. Dr. Ring is past Chair of the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine Group on Minority Health and Multicultural Education, and has led numerous workshops on culturally responsive medicine. He is the author of The Long and Winding Road: Personal Reflections of an Anti-Racism Trainer published by the American Journal of Orthopsychiatry. He is also a co-author with Dr. Luis Samaniego, Dr. Hector Flores, Dr. Julie Nyquist and Dr. Suzanne Mitchell of Curriculum for Culturally Responsive Health Care: The Step-By-Step Guide for Cultural Competence Training published by Radcliff Publishing.
